As You Sow, So Shall You Reap

Or Do You?

Folklore Galore

We have heard it numerous times. As we grew, from our parents, in the school, from the elders, in the stories. Everywhere it is the same message, “As You Sow, So Shall You Reap”. Here is a story which I’m narrating for my readers to go through and analyse. See what wrong was sown, for the consequences reaped. The story is real life. Few changes have been made, honouring privacy.

Setup

This story is about a person, Raman, who is a common middle class property dealer, in a small town, by profession. He ekes out his living by doing activities resembling that of any other person in this profession. He lacks formal education, not because it could be ill afforded by his parents, but due to sheer lack of interest. Married and blessed with a child, Raman co habits the same house as his parents. His father, Akaash, used to help his son in the initial incubation period of the business. Of late Akaash is more into “Satsang” and similar/related activities. Being a glib and smooth talker, Raman could easily impress his prospective clients, who would readily agree to do business through him. Vimlesh was one such person who agreed to handover the house of his mother to Raman for routine renovation and renting in April 2019. About two months later, in June 2019, When Raman enquired about the progress of maintenance work, much to his amazement, he was informed by a chirpy Raman that not only the renovation has been completed but a tenant, by the name of Randeep, is living in the house for about a month now!! When asked about the renting formalities and paperwork with the tenant, Raman reassured Vimlesh to take it easy as the tenant was a well known relative and that his word itself should be enough of a surety. Intrigued, Vimlesh let the issue pass as everything was in his favour and Raman was a reliable person.

Pandemic Period

For one medical reason or another, neither Vimlesh nor his mother could personally visit the tenant or Raman. Life went on the usual way and to all our dismay, outbreak of Corona pandemic obviated any chance of visiting and meeting either of them. However, by the end of 2021, Vimlesh and his mother visited their house. They were aghast to see the deplorable condition of the house, meet the repulsive tenant Randeep and his bedridden mother. Not wanting to further continue with this arrangement, Vimlesh asked Raman to have the house vacated. With his characteristic aplomb, Raman assured of prompt vacation.

Souring Up

Randeep, a so-called relative of Raman, refused to oblige. An anxious Vimlesh and his mother made repeated entreaties to Raman, Randeep and his relatives beseeching them to get the house vacated. For the next one year and upto the beginning of 2023, several unsuccessful efforts were made by Vimlesh to get his mother’s house vacated. Now Raman and Randeep started ignoring calls from Vimlesh. One day Vimlesh could get hold of Raman in his office. That day Raman disclosed the story of how Randeep was allowed into the house. Randeep along with his two sisters approached Akaash. The destitute sisters sought help from Akaash in getting a rented accommodation for their ailing bedridden mother. Akaash’s heart melted with empathy. A benevolent man, Akaash immediately asked his son Raman to let them into the house of Vimlesh. An act of piety, done in good faith, made Akaash ebullient with joy. He could practice the teachings of “Satsang” in real life and his action brought relief and solace to people in need.

Who knew that this benevolent act would lead to the events that were about to unfold.

The mother of Randeep passed away. Since then, the rent paying sister of Randeep completely disowned his brother and stopped paying the rent. Vimlesh became desperate. He approached the local police for having been cheated and misled by the property dealer Raman. He knocked at the doors of local bigwigs and henchmen. Several concurrent actions taken by Vimlesh exerted tremendous pressure on Raman. He gained much unwanted attention from law enforcing agencies. He started losing business to his competitors. Repenting his father’s act of kindness and repeatedly cursing Randeep for letting him down, Raman removed electricity and water supply from the house. Next day when Randeep went out of the house, Raman put a lock from outside, preventing the return and entry of Randeep back into the house. 15 days later, Randeep requested Raman to open the house and let him take his belongings and go away.

Who Reaped What

The belief that a good act will lead to a good response no longer holds true for Akaash. Both Akaash and Raman are God fearing, honest and dependable persons. But an act done in good faith and with good intentions brought to both of them much unwanted agony and discomfort. Vimlesh and his mother had reasonable faith in Raman. That is gone now. They faced much harassment, misery and were on the verge of losing their house made from hard earned income of his father. This sufferance for no explicable reason but only due to having faith in a person who proved himself trustworthy by several actions in the past. I’m sure many of us would have somewhat similar stories to narrate. Some may go on to say that there is no direct causal effect to your acts and the resultant response it begets. Still some may argue that the result of one action does not depend on that very action but a sum total of several actions in the past. While we like to cling to our views, the certainty of “जैसी करनी वैसी भरनी” will always remain questionable
